The Classic Hero Winner: Crono
Chrono Trigger (1995)
Nothing screams "Classic Hero" quite like a protagonist who doesn't (or won't) speak. Yet somehow, Crono remains one of people's most beloved RPG protagonists. If nothing else, he exemplifies that actions speak louder than words. Through truly heroic feats, he takes risks and makes sacrifices with blade in hand, personifying "adventure." Countless eight year-olds in their backyards have hopped around and swung sticks, imaginations aflare because of Crono. Traversing past, present and future, he has saved a princess, closed a cult devouring townspeople, inspired downtrodden friends to greatness, put tortured souls to rest, sacrificed his life for his companions, and prevented the freakin' apocalypse... all without consideration for himself! Truly the pinnacle of altruism, none can argue that Crono embodies the true essence of a classic hero.

The Classic Hero Runner-up: Hiro
Lunar: Eternal Blue (1995)
Hiro is a great example of a classic hero. Unlike many other heroes we see nowadays, he's not silent, he's not a brooding "emo kid," he doesn't have a tragic secret past, he doesn't grow into a hero reluctantly, etc. Hiro is just a young, enthusiastic, upbeat guy who wants to go on adventures and is always willing to help anybody in need without ever expecting anything in return.

While exploring the Blue Spire, Hiro ends up helping an apparently helpless girl which thrusts him into the adventure of a lifetime. Through this adventure, Hiro helps countless citizens of Lunar, befriends many companions, falls in love, and ultimately saves the entire world, all with determination, integrity, selflessness, and kindness. What more could you want from an RPG hero?
