Crowdfunding Chronicles Volume 4 - 1/11/2019
It's a good week for pixel art!
01.11.19 - 11:05 PM

Dear Readers! We hope your winter holidays have been full of exciting video games, and only a negligible amount of snow shovelling. It's been a quiet few weeks in terms of new crowdfunding campaigns, but our feature article has finally returned with two unique titles. Read on!

Highlights: Ongoing Campaigns to Keep an Eye On

Carrier Trail
Campaign Ends: February 21
Carrier Trail Game Boy Style Title Screen

Platform: PC. Mobile and Switch are possibilities.

Carrier Trail is a new adventure title inspired by the classic game, Oregon Trail. Sadly, I have never played Oregon Trail, though apparently it involves dysentery. Your mission to deliver a mysterious package is different each time you play; events are randomly generated and offer a countless number of choices. Will you help an old man who slipped while throwing a snowball at you? Or does he deserve his fate??

While the game is presented in a simple-yet-stylish Gameboy color palette, stretch goals offer the opportunity to play using NES-style graphics instead. Additional stretch goals add expansions featuring more events and gameplay mechanics.

I recommend taking a look at Carrier Trail. It's simple, but unique and full of humor. I doubt there are too many other games describing boogers zooming around at mach speed, in any case.

One Step from Eden
Campaign Ends: February 2
One Step From Eden - Grid Battle Screen Shot

Platform: PC. Stretch goals add Switch.

Set in a cute sci-fi anime world, One Step From Eden is a fast-paced deckbuilding game in the spirit of Mega Man Battle Network. Just like its inspiration, the action in this game all takes place on a grid rendered with pixel graphics. Choose from among 8 characters to play as, each with their own unique skills. Then, customize your deck from over 200 spell cards, and unleash combos and chain attacks in battle. You'll need a combination of strategy and speed to progress; judging by the trailers, the battles will be absolutely chaotic! Certainly not a game to fall asleep by.

As a nice bonus, One Step from Eden offers plenty of replayability. Most importantly, the worlds are all procedurally generated, and your choices determine the ending. Once you beat the game's eight deadly bosses, you can also replay things from their perspective. Finally, for those of you that enjoy a bit of punishment, you have the option of playing the game's "Hell Mode." Fun times! I highly recommend taking a look at the campaign page if you're a fan of Mega Man Battle Network or need some action-filled mayhem to complete your afternoon.

Noteworthy Updates: News from Finished Campaigns

  • A mysterious area known as "The Bizarre" will now be added to Wasteland 3 thanks to Slacker Backer support. Find more info on this, along with some details about Microsoft's aquisition of inXile on the campaign's update page!
  • Some of you may have already heard this unfortunate news, but if not, I regret to inform you that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night will no longer be made for Mac and Linux platforms. More info in our article from a couple weeks ago!

Boring Disclaimer: While it's possible some of us at RPGFan may be backers of the games mentioned in these articles, this does not influence our coverage or our featured game choices. We make our selections simply based on what active campaigns feel like interesting ones to present to our readers, and are not given special access or perks by the developers.

tl;dr: We think these games show potential, and want to share them with you.
