Nihon Falcom recently held a shareholder meeting wherein the company discussed the future of their seminal Legend of Heroes franchise. Among the topics discussed was the next entry in the saga: The Legend of Heroes: Hajimari no Kiseki, or "Trails of the Beginning," due out for the PlayStation 4 next summer in Japan. Hajimari no Kiseki is being billed as "an ambitious title and turning point that will lead to the series' conclusion."

Check out an official synopsis from Falcom down below. Be wary of spoilers, especially considering Cold Steel IV hasn't come out in North America yet!

This is the end, as well as the beginning—.

The whole of the Empire was weakened in the disaster known as the "Great Twilight." Thanks to the efforts of the heroes, the land of Zemuria pulled through the crisis, and a new fate has been spun, moving the story towards its "end point."

The game is set on the continent of Zemuria after the Great Twilight. The three main characters and their actions all over the continent cause troubled destinies to become intricately intertwined.

One is a "hero."

One is a "liberator."

One is a "hermit."

The Legend of Heroes: Hajimari no Kiseki features plenty of new systems that utilize the strengths of the Trails series, including a "Cross Story" system that allows players to switch between three routes at will to depict stories happening in parallel from different perspectives; over 50 playable characters, including some new faces; and expansive "Episode" scenarios that delve into the backgrounds of each character.

How do the people of Crossbell feel as they prepare to be independent once more? What thoughts pass through the minds of the people of the Empire who lost their mighty pillar? And what is the agenda of the society Ouroboros, whose Grandmaster decreed that the "Orpheus Final Plan" be advanced to a new stage...?

The Crossbell Duology

In other Legend of Heroes news, both Zero no Kiseki and Ao no Kiseki (the Crossbell duology) are coming to the PlayStation 4 in Japan, and are set for a Spring 2020 release. Zero no Kiseki Kai and Ao no Kiseki Kai will feature high-definition graphics, voice acting, and other new features. These include a fast-forward option, enhanced sound quality, the option to skip battle cut-in scenes, and a variety of UI improvements. Neither title have yet to see the light of day in the West, largely because the PSP was long dead by the time the series was popular out here. Hopefully having both on a modern platform means XSEED or NISA will allow these games to finally release in other territories.

A wonderful cast performs the story of protagonist Lloyd Bannings and the other members of the Crossbell Police Department's Special Support Section. In The Legend of Heroes: Zero no Kiseki Kai, the first chapter of the Crossbell arc, the story runs from the founding of the Special Support Section to the case of a religious cult. In The Legend of Heroes: Ao no Kiseki Kai, the second chapter, the story revolves around the "Mirage Treasure" that occurred in Crossbell State parallel to the events of the Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel series. These grand stories can be enjoyed with fully-voiced dialogue.

Lastly, Falcom is developing their own proprietary graphics engine. The completion of this new engine is still a long ways off as of this writing, but Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo is excited to see how it will work with future projects.
