Coming This Week, 2/25/19
An indie extravaganza to round out February.
02.25.19 - 10:48 PM

Can you believe it's already almost March? The first months of 2019 have flown by, and while we may be collectively apoplectic at last night's Oscars debacle (seriously, Spike Lee lost to Driving Miss Daisy for the second time!), we can take some small solace in the number of quality video games being released. There is a large group this week, so without further ado...

Child of Light Ultimate Edition + Valiant Hearts: The Great War - Switch (February 26th)

Ubisoft is releasing a package of two phenomenal titles onto the Nintendo Switch this Tuesday. The first of these, Child of Light, will be very familiar to longtime listeners of Retro Encounter: it's an excellent side-scrolling RPG with combat akin to the popular Grandia titles, beloved by many members of our staff. And while we didn't cover it, the tales of war and sacrifice covered in Valiant Hearts are also well worth your time. Both of these games will now be playable on the go with the Switch's unique capabilities. If you'd like to know more about Child of Light, be sure to read our review.

Skyhill - Switch (February 26th)

We've covered Skyhill on Coming This Week before, back when it came out on PS4. Now, publisher Klabater is bringing this apocalyptic roguelike to the Nintendo Switch. Set against the backdrop of World War III and a vicious mutant threat, players will fight to survive in an array of randomly generated maps as they scavenge for resources. Roguelikes aren't in short supply these days, but if you're looking for another indie title to grace your Switch hardware, this one is definitely worth a look.

Tech Support: Error Unknown - PC (February 27th)

Now we're getting into the really neat stuff. From developer Dragon Slumber and publisher Iceberg Interactive, Tech Support: Error Unknown is a simulation title that places players into the middle of a vast conspiracy. It kind of reminds me of Papers, Please from a distance, with its mix of mundane workplace simulation and intense decision-making with heavy consequences. Players will be able to unlock several endings to the story as they make their way through, all while choosing allegiances as they learn more about what's happening.

Deponia Doomsday - PS4, XB1 (February 27th)

Originally released for PC, Mac, and Linux, Deponia Doomsday is the fourth entry in the cult-hit Deponia series. Taking place after the original trilogy's conclusion, Deponia Doomsday presents players will another rollicking adventure game, where players will ultimately be tasked with changing the fate of Deponia and averting a terrible crisis. Daedalic Entertainment will finally bring the game to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this Wednesday.

Deltarune: Chapter 1 Screenshot

Deltarune: Chapter 1 - PS4, Switch (February 28th)

God bless you, Toby Fox. After its debut last year, the first chapter of Deltarune (an Undertale-adjacent title that carries the same pedigree as its famous predecessor), is making its way to both the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch consoles for the low, low price of free. More Deltarune is on the way, but for now, even more gamers have the chance to try Toby Fox's latest out for themselves.

Doom & Destiny Screenshot

Doom & Destiny - PS4 (February 28th)

Imagine you and your wisecracking, RPG-loving crew suddenly ending up in an RPG trope-laden world that desperately needs saving. Doom & Destiny is the story of a group of similar youngsters and their adventures. This title has previously landed on the Switch, and is now arriving on PS4. Looking at it, it feels like an interesting combination of Earthbound and Stranger Things. Take a look and join in the humor on February 28th.

Tardy Screenshot

Tardy - Switch (March 1st)

Last, but not least, we have Tardy. Brought to us from One Wing Cicada and Drageus Games, this game is a "story driven space adventure" with an emphasis on tinkering with computers and other devices, all in an effort to get protagonist Ramto back home. He's awoken all alone on a spaceship, where the crew has vanished due to unknown circumstances. It's the player's job to get to the bottom of this, all while fiddling with the surrounding devices and environment. It's a good time to be a fan of adventure games, that's for sure.

And that's a wrap for this week, folks! That's a pretty crowded note to end February on, but with all of these new game releases, there's bound to be something that catches your fancy. In the meantime, stay tuned to RPGFan for the best RPG coverage on the planet, and we'll see you next time.
