Crowdfunding Chronicles Volume 5 - 1/25/2019
And suddenly, we're back to five titles this week!
01.25.19 - 9:32 PM

It's cold and horrible outside, the type of weather where you should be wearing an extra pair of pants on top of your pants. Thankfully, new video games are coming to the rescue. We have a full list of titles this week from a variety of genres; if you'd like to take part in a wrestling match, make friends with talking animals, or explore some beautiful summer scenery, read on. I know I'm looking forward to that last option.

Highlights: Ongoing Campaigns to Keep an Eye On

The Blind Prophet: Blood of the Apostle
Campaign Ends: February 11

Platform: PC, Mac

As I am an avid reader (hoarder) of comic books, The Blind Prophet: Blood of the Apostle immediately caught my attention: a gritty urban fantasy adventure in the vein of LucasArts classics, full of stylish artwork inspired by comic art giants such as Mike Mignola and Frank Miller.

The Blind Prophet follows Bartholomeus, one of God's 12 chosen sons tasked with protecting humanity from demons. The game's traditional point-and-click format includes dialogue choices and ethical dilemmas and is expected to take about 5-6 hours to complete. Be warned: this is not a game for the wee ones, as it features plenty of violence and mature themes. I advise you not to watch the trailer at your place of employment!

Overall, I'm really pleased with what I see on Blind Prophet's campaign page. The gothic and noir influenced artwork is very appealing, and I'm always up for new point-and-click-adventures. I recommend taking a look!

Brass Town Wrestling
Campaign Ends: February 12

Platform: PC

Once in a while, I enjoy watching wrestling. Perhaps you do too! If so, I'd recommend taking a look at Brass Town Wrestling, a new RPG in the works from Mauro Amatosi.

While it looks like a simple RPGMaker game, Brass Town Wrestling is packed with features. Inspired by Harvest Moon and Princess Maker, you'll have plenty to do while you work your way up to the wrestling Hall of Fame. This includes fighting in various matches, developing relationships with the town's inhabitants, catching chickens, fishing, cooking, and going to the gym to build up your giant muscles. The game also features a wrestling-themed morality system: will you become a face or a heel?

Brass Town Wrestling sounds like quite a unique little title that is sure to please fans of the sport. It is common knowledge that going to the gym in a video game is a heck of a lot more fun than going to the gym in real life, and Brass Town looks like the right place to be.

The Final Hours
Campaign Ends: February 13

Platform: PC

Do you have a deep-seated hatred of anthropomorphic characters? If so, you may want to avoid The Final Hours (though I'm hoping not!). This pixel-art RPG follows the adventures of a young arctic fox on a mission to gather the shards of the Time Stone, which have been scattered across the universe by a sinister leonine entity known as Chaos.

The Final Hours features puzzles, combat, and parkour. Unfortunately, the campaign page could use a lot of work. Not much info is given about the gameplay itself, though a variety of locations (and potentially even a rhythm minigame) are highlighted in the trailer. Overall, the game is still somewhat mysterious, but from the tidbits of info we are given, I am intrigued. I definitely see the influence of Earthbound and Inherit the Earth: Quest for the Orb in the trailer. Hopefully more details will be revealed soon!

Little Legend
Campaign Ends: February 8

Platform: PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One

Made by French developer Nevermind, Little Legend presents a stunning new fantasy world for you to explore. Play as Pimpim, a teenage girl with magical powers (and an adorable name) on a quest to learn about her mysterious past...along with that of the world itself.

The game is a 2D open world adventure, featuring combat, puzzles, multiple pathways of varying difficulty, and lots of magic. You can craft new spells based on elements found in the environment, such as dust or fire, and even transform into a cute flying weasel that can squeeze into small spaces and talk to various plants and animals. His design reminds me a little of Falkor from The Neverending Story, now in a handy miniature size!

Little Legend's many other features include a day/night cycle, item crafting, and in-game photography. The dubbing is presented in French, though English and Spanish subtitles will be provided. In addition, combat is a little less violent than in most games; you don't actually kill your enemies, just cause them to ignore you or go away.

In my opinion, the scenery alone makes Little Legend a title not to be missed, and it's great to hear that multiple solutions will be available for those of us who might be a little...subpar...at action sequences. I can't wait to explore this beautiful new world!

Wicked Willow
Campaign Ends: February 13
Wicked Willow Screenshot - Girl in creepy forest

Platform: PC

Wicked Willow is a gothic-tinged visual novel by author T.F. Wright. It centers around a girl named...Willow (surprise!), a young hipster with a tragic background and newly-acquired magical powers. The game originally caught my attention due to the attractive, crisp character art by MaterArsenic, but also thanks to the cute talking cat with an Australian accent. Cats are important.

While Wicked Willow features a healthy amount of romance, the FAQ clearly lists that it is NOT a dating sim. The specific details of how the romances will play out are yet to be seen, though it is noted that your decisions will influence character relationships. Many of the characters and romance options are part of the LGBT spectrum; in addition, the game is set in 1993 and deals with some of the issues facing the LGBT community at that time.

Wicked Willow focuses heavily on the story. Puzzles and stats are absent, and there is no impossible-to-obtain "true" ending. Every ending is the true ending! Be cautious, though, as you will be faced with a number of moral dilemmas throughout your journey. Will you use your powers for good? Or will you be a naughty, naughty witch? I personally lean toward...good. Maybe.

Noteworthy Updates: News from Finished Campaigns
