Coming This Week, 12/10/18
A plethora of indie role-playing games.
12.10.18 - 10:25 PM

2018 may have felt like the longest year in human history, but it's finally, mercifully almost over. (Want to feel old? The Tide Pod thing was in January.) Just because the year is waning doesn't mean the game releases are slowing down. This week, we have a number of long-awaited indie releases, several of which are coming out on Nintendo Switch... and one in particular we never thought would see the light of day. Let's begin.

Prey: Typhon Hunter - December 11th (PS4, XB1, PC)

Interesting developments are afoot as Prey gets some DLC on December 11th. Prey: Typhon Hunter introduces multiplayer gameplay and is available as an update from the Prey: Mooncrash DLC. There will also be a single-player VR experience along with this coming later on. It's a great time to try this title if you have been waiting to get into it, and be sure to check out our review of the original game.

Salt and Sanctuary: Drowned Tome Edition - December 11th (Switch)

Next we have Salt and Sanctuary, a game that pays homage to Dark Souls and the Metroidvania genre and was released a couple years back. We really dug it at the time, and now this grim adventure is finally making an appearance on Nintendo's portable juggernaut. It'll be out on the 11th, so get ready.

Knights of Pen and Paper 2: Deluxiest Edition - December 11th (PS4) December 13th (Switch) and December 14th (XB1)

A sequel to the delightful Knights of Pen and Paper, Seaven Studio and Plug In Digital are bringing Knights of Pen and Paper 2 to consoles this week. The game is an homage to tabletop role-playing, with players assembling a party and going on an adventure guided by the Game Master. Plus, the whole thing is rendered with some truly wonderful pixel art.

Omensight Screenshot

Omensight: Definitive Edition - December 13th (Switch)

This one's a little more recent, but no less welcome. We reviewed Spearhead Games' excellent little action RPG earlier this year, and now the game is making its way to Nintendo Switch. Players assume the role of the mysterious Harbinger, fighting their way through a post-apocalyptic world as they attempt to piece together the events that led to the calamity. Omensight also looks absolutely gorgeous with its slick, stylized art, so definitely pick it up if you haven't already.

SEGA AGES: Phantasy Star Screenshot

SEGA AGES: Phantasy Star - December 13th (Switch)

Okay, now we're talking. SEGA has begun porting some of their classic titles to Nintendo Switch under the "SEGA AGES" banner, and now the original Phantasy Star is getting this same treatment. This game is a milestone for the JRPG genre, kickstarting a franchise while also providing a wholly unique experience from its contemporaries. Definitely check this one out if you're looking for some classic dungeon-crawling goodness.

Below Screenshot

Below - December 14th (XB1, PC)

We first heard about Capybara Games' procedurally generated adventure Below many E3s ago, and since then, it's been more-or-less radio silence regarding its status. But now, finally, Below will be making its way to the PC and Xbox One this Friday. The game looks super interesting, as players will try to survive a dark, dangerous, and randomized world.

And that's a wrap, folks. As always, be sure to keep an eye on RPGFan, as we'll continue to provide the best RPG coverage on the planet.
