Coming This Week, 9/17/18
How about a port of ye olde Undertale? 09.17.18 - 8:18 PM The summer game release doldrums have ended and the pre-holiday Fall season is upon us. For RPG fans this week, all attention is on Xenoblade Chronicles 2's Torna expansion finally coming out. However, there's other exciting stuff this week as well, including some long-awaited ports and new entries in classic franchises. So let's get right into it! The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep - PC (September 18th) Classic Western RPG franchise The Bard's Tale is making a comeback with Barrows Deep, a new entry in the series by the prolific InXile Entertainment. One of the granddaddies of the RPG genre, players will once again navigate first-person dungeons and engage in tactical combat. This time, though, it's all rendered in cutting-edge Unreal Engine 4 graphics. It'll hit PCs this Tuesday! Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk - PS4, PC, Switch (September 18th) Hey, look, another dungeon crawler! This one's from Nippon Ichi, and was originally released for the Vita (rest in peace) in Japan. Now, it's coming westward for PlayStation 4, PC, and Switch. You can check out a hands-on preview of the game by Mike Salbato. Keep an eye out for a full review in the near future, too. Undertale - Switch (September 18th)
Finally! Undertale is one of the biggest indie success stories in the business, and now this beloved RPG is arriving on the Nintendo Switch. We'll have more coverage of the Switch version in the near future, so keep an eye out for that. In the meantime, I've got to get started on this Genocide run... CrossCode - PC (September 20th)
[Added 9/18/18] It's been a long time coming, but CrossCode will finally leave Steam Early Access this week. Alana wrote a preview last year and was optimistic, and in only a few days, we'll get to see if the rest of the game matches its lovely pixel art in terms of polish. Look for our review soon! A Case of Distrust - Switch (September 20th) More thrills and intrigue for the Switch this week with the arrival of the narrative mystery A Case of Distrust. This title, released earlier this year, has a little something for everyone. Boasting talent that's worked on such games as Dragon Age: Inquisiton and LA Noire, you can be sure it will appeal to a wider audience than serious mystery fans alone...although there is, in fact, a character named Mr. Green. Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse - Switch (September 21st)
Speaking of ports releasing on Switch, Broken Sword 5 is a continuation of the popular point-and-click adventure series. It came out a few years ago, and we have a review of the PC version: now, this adventure is going portable on Nintendo's hardware. Exciting stuff! Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna - The Golden Country - Switch (September 21st) Alright, here we go. While already available for Season Pass holders, Torna - The Golden Country is also getting a standalone physical release, which comes out this week. You can find out what we thought of the expansion pack in Caitlin's review. Spoiler alert: it might actually be better than the base game! Give that a read and prepare to dive in to Xenoblade Chronicles 2's gorgeous world once again. And that is a wrap for this week! Stay tuned to RPGFan for more of the latest and greatest RPG coverage, and I'll see you next time.
