Time to Switch things up.
09.10.18 - 8:53 PM

"Put it on Switch" has become something of a mantra among gaming enthusiasts as of late, and with good reason. Nintendo's nifty piece of hardware is just plain fun, and thanks to its interchangeability as a home console and a portable device, the Switch has become a home for all kinds of experiences. This week in particular brings a whole bunch of ports making their way to the Switch, so let's get cracking.

Dust: An Elysian Tail - Nintendo Switch (September 10th)

Before indie side-scrollers were a dime a dozen on the Interwebz, there was Dust: An Elysian Tail. This gorgeous Metroidvania type game was designed by one Dean Dodrill over the course of three and a half years, and his efforts paid off: I mean, just look at those visuals! As of this writing, this excellent adventure can be played on Nintendo Switch, so get on that... after you read our review from back in the day, of course, and jam out to some of that sick HyperDuck music.

Revenant Dogma - Xbox One (September 12th)

Somewhere, lost in the search index between "Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom" and "Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen," lies Revenant Dogma, which is a... Kemco RPG with 3D battle graphics? Well, assuming you've already downloaded Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey...actually, could we just get Switch ports of those games? Sorry, I think I lost my train of thought. Anyway, if you really are craving a JRPG to play on your Xbox One, Revenant Dogma is almost certainly that.

Bastion - Switch (September 13th)

Okay, now here's a game I can talk about. Bastion is the debut title from Supergiant Games, and it is a fantastic little action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world. As a kid known as... well, the Kid (possibly related to Billy), you are tasked with exploring the shattered world and rebuilding a refuge known as the Bastion, all while the player's actions are narrated by the dulcet tones of Logan Cunningham. It's coming to Switch on the 13th, and I would imagine it's an excellent fit for the platform. There's more Supergiant goodness on the way, too: Transistor is coming to the system later this year.

As someone who writes for an RPG enthusiast fansite, I'm a big fan of video games that try to bring the trappings of tabletop gaming into the electronic space. There's something fitting about the concept, especially when one considers the Gary Gygax-inspired roots of our favorite genre. Super Dungeon Tactics takes a leaf out of the SRPG playbook, calling back to classics like Final Fantasy Tactics or Advance Wars while using a boardgame facade. This little beauty is coming to Switch on the 13th. Bob Richardson wrote more about the game in his write-up on the 2016 Origins Game Fair, which I would encourage you to read.

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain: Goblin Scourge Edition - Switch (September 13th)

In a similar vein, we have The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, a game which sets out to recreate a fantasy gamebook campaign of the same name. This one kind of reminds me of Yasumi Matsuno's Crimson Shroud, which opted for a similar approach. Anyway, the new Goblin Scourge edition is hitting Nintendo Switch on the 13th, and if you want to know what we thought of it, Luna Lee has a review to check out.

Wasteland 2 Director's Cut Screenshot

Wasteland 2: Director's Cut - Switch (September 13th)

Last, but certainly not least, we have Wasteland 2: Director's Cut, which is bringing its irradiated vision of the future to Nintendo Switch. InXile Entertainment has had a big hand in re-popularizing the classic western CRPG, and Wasteland 2 is one of their biggest success stories. If you're a fan of Fallout and are curious about that series' more esoteric roots, you now have another avenue to experience this gem.

And that's a wrap for this week, everyone! It's the beginning of an awfully busy September, and next week is sure to be even crazier when it comes to game releases. Something about a... golden country... Xeno-something? Well, whatever the case, we'll see you next time, and stay tuned to RPGFan.com for the latest and greatest in RPG news.
