Compile Heart's Varnir of the Dragon Star, which is due out in Japan later this October, has received quite a bit of new media lately. This includes new screenshots and a bevy of informative videos. The first of these, which you can check out below, is a nine-minute overview trailer that goes over the game's many unique features.

In battle, player characters will float in the air, switching between "layers" of the battlefield freely (beginning in the Middle Layer, and switching to the Upper and Lower levels). Three party members participate in battle, but other members can be set as "supports" that can block or counterattack foes. Players will be able to gauge their position in battle with an Action Order meter in the upper-right area of the screen (think Final Fantasy X), and by using the lines that separate the three Layers. The Formation of party members in battle is also determined by these Layers.

Character skills are split between Physical and Magical skills, and are then divided into further subcategories. Physical attacks cover Slash, Strike, Pierce, and Shoot damage, while Magical attacks cover a wide elemental spectrum of Earth, Fire, Water, Wind, Light, and Darkness. So far, so standard, but players can use Physical attacks to potentially block enemy turns should they strike a weakness or score a critical hit. Even better, Magical attacks can be used regardless of what Layer the player is on, making them very versatile.

There are also Devour skills, which can be used to consume dragons. By raising an enemy's "Fear Level," the player will have an easier time devouring them. Should the Fear Level reach its peak, the player can engage in a Weak Point Rush, which has a 100% chance of devouring the enemy. Speaking of, a character's "Dragon Gauge" will rise during (and carry over between) battles, triggering a mighty Dragon Awakening transformation. While this can be extremely beneficial, beware: using it while in critical condition can cause the user to turn into a berserk "Mad Dragon," with higher attack power but extremely low defense.

Compile Heart has also released an additional three-minute trailer for Varnir of the Dragon Star, as well as the game's opening movie and a brief overview of the bonuses available at Japanese retailers. Give those a watch below.
