It's been a long, hard road for the Star Ocean franchise. Following the disappointing series reboot Integrity and Faithlessness, it seemed like the series would never have another shot at redemption. However, according to series producer Shuichi Kobayashi, there may yet be a future for Star Ocean.

For starters, Star Ocean: The Last Hope 4K & Full HD Remaster is now available for download on PlayStation 4 and Steam as a digital-only release. Those who purchase the game before December 12th will be able to get a 10% discount, which is a nice little incentive to try the game out. You can enjoy a launch trailer below.

According to Kobayashi, he "never intended" for the Star Ocean series' revival to end with Integrity and Faithlessness. Rather, he didn't want to see the series lie dormant and took it upon himself to oversee it, even taking in to account Integrity and Faithlessness's disappointing sales numbers. "Nowadays if you make something from scratch and end it there, the hurdle of making profit is very high," says Kobayashi. "For this reason, it’s important to manage resources."

By recycling resources from Integrity and Faithlessness for use in mobile title Star Ocean: Anamnesis (made with the "Aska Engine," Tri-Ace's own proprietary engine which utilizes PS4-quality assets even on mobile platforms), Kobayashi hopes that the popularity of the latter title, combined with the cost-effective reuse of engine assets, will allow the series to continue into new installments.
