Introducing Disgaea 5's Character World
I wish I could get stronger by playing a board game.
03.13.15 - 4:43 PM

Building on previously released details about the Character World, a new video from Nippon Ichi explains this gameplay mechanic in Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance. Series veterans will already be familiar with the Item World, a "world" within an item that players can explore to raise the power of that item. The Character World is similar, except instead of fighting through a multi-level random dungeon, you play a board game.

In the Character World, a character has the chance to move through a series of tiles that are arranged like a Sugoroku board (a Japanese game similar to backgammon). The character moves by rolling a die and traveling the corresponding number of tiles. The tiles that the character lands on will either raise an attribute like strength or magic resist, or apply some kind of penalty. Once the character finishes the game by reaching the goal post they can pick a stat to increase, so you are guaranteed to raise at least one stat if you finish the Character World. You can watch the pint-sized overlord Zeroken attempt to get stronger below.

Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance comes out on March 26th in Japan for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and North America and Europe in the fall.
