Square Enix today announced that it has shipped more than four million copies of its Level 5-developed DS RPG Dragon Quest IX to Japanese retailers to date.

For reference, the newest addition to the company's long-running flagship franchise had sold 2.3 million units on the first two days of its availability in July.

Square Enix did not disclose actual sales figures in today's press release, but it seems that the game is on track to match the sales performance of its two most recent predecessors. Dragon Quest VII for PlayStation and the PlayStation 2-based Dragon Quest VIII boast lifetime sales of 4.1 and 3.6 million copies (4.7 million copies worldwide), respectively.
