Square Enix has sold more than 2.34 million copies of its DS-based blockbuster title Dragon Quest IX on July 11th and 12th, the first two days of the game's availablity in Japan. For reference, the PlayStation 2-based prequel Dragon Quest VIII sold 2.23 million copies on days 1 and 2.

Prior to Dragon Quest IX's release, some Japanese commentators have already wondered whether the game could sell 10 million units. The current record holder in franchise history is Dragon Quest VII. The PlayStation-based title boasts lifetime sales of more than 4.1 million units.
