#4 - Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 (PS2)

Modern-day rural Japan is not a setting often used in video games, but Persona 4 not only dared to use it, but captured that setting beautifully. People who have spent time in the inaka (Japanese countryside) say that Persona 4's depiction of that setting is quite accurate. This unique setting is what makes this game more than just a mere evolution of what Persona 3 started, but the improved mechanics based on Persona 3's ideas make for a far more refined experience. And true to form, the storyline features believable characters, heavy themes, and fantastic dialogue. The graphics are stylish and lend honest atmosphere to the setting, and Shoji Meguro delivers another fantastic soundtrack. Persona 4 showed us an RPG setting players had rarely, if ever, seen before, and perhaps future RPGs can take a page from this book and try playing outside the more conventional sandbox.
