#3 - Final Fantasy IX (PSone)

After enjoying spectacular success with Final Fantasy VII and VIII, Square threw a curveball by going back to its roots. Symbolized by the return of the crystal, Square recognized that traditional FF enthusiasts – those on the side of FFVI in the great VI vs VII debate – were afraid of the developer's changing style. Through sneaky references to previous games in the decade-old series, a four-character party system, and oddly-proportioned body types, old school fans had much in which to revel. The essence of what makes this title timeless is its ability to travel back in time while simultaneously catering to modern game design expectations. With its enigmatic charm, archetypal yet deep characters, and a lighter plot than most games within the franchise, Square crafted a beloved game that only aficionados of the genre could truly appreciate. Thankfully, Tetra Master didn't hold it back too much.
