#1 - Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 (PS2) |
On April 5, 2005, RPGFan introduced the Editor's Choice Award, and the first recipient of that award, Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga, stands at the top of this list along with its sequel/continuation. Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 is the highest-rated game on RPGFan to date, and it sits atop this list for good reason. The titles featured the Press Turn system, first introduced in Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, a system which still stands as one of the most engaging and strategic battle systems in an RPG. The graphics, amazing for their time, still look good, despite being eclipsed by the HD revolution, and the voice acting stands strong. The mature, somewhat disturbing story spans the two games well and made gamers want to keep playing. There is not an aspect of Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 that wasn't crafted incredibly well. These two games are the epitome of what the Japanese RPG of the 2000s should have been. If you haven't played these two titles, you owe it to yourself to go and rend, slaughter, devour your enemies. There is no other way to survive. You cannot escape your hunger, Warriors of Purgatory. |
