Episode 17: South Park: The Stick of Truth
Josh Curry

Wow. Just wow. South Park: The Stick of Truth absolutely surpassed all my expectations. As a fan of the show — and after listening to the hype for two years — I expected The Stick of Truth to be nothing short of excellent and it didn't let me down. This game does almost nothing wrong; From the interactive combat system to the faux Facebook menu, South Park oozes character. To top it off, it is the most hilarious game I have ever played.

It is obvious to anyone who plays through South Park: The Stick of Truth that it was a passion project for everyone involved in the development. Do yourself a favor and play through this incredible masterpiece.

South Park: The Stick of Truth is a joy to play. The game nails the atmosphere and humor of the show perfectly (due of course to Matt and Trey making the game) and being able to jump into that world and interact with the cast is a blast. Adding onto that is a simple but rewarding (and always laugh worthy) RPG combat system, backed by a plot worthy of a half season or more of South Park content. It's enough to make any fan fall in love.

The Stick of Truth is the funniest game I've ever played. Humor like this isn't often, if ever, found in games. Mixing that in with an awesome backyard fantasy RPG just makes it a truly great game.

If you were to take away the South Park veneer from The Stick of Truth, you'd have a turn-based RPG that's a little rote and maybe too easy. Turn-based combat with timing elements similar to Paper Mario, a smallish game world, and a short playtime. Hardcore players might balk at such a lightweight RPG. They'd also be missing the point, because The Stick of Truth is pure South Park distilled into a video game. I found an incredible number of South Park references crammed into The Stick of Truth, to my delight (I'm a big fan of the show). The game's storyline, dialog, combat, and even basic actions are hysterical to behold. Every time I thought The Stick of Truth couldn't possibly get any crazier, it would blow me away with its next set piece or boss fight.

The Stick of Truth may not have innovative RPG mechanics, but it's one of the best RPGs I've played this decade. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone clearly love video games, and parody them mercilessly in the best South Park game ever made. OK, it's also the only good South Park game ever made, so I guess there isn't much competition for that tile. If you're okay with a little crudeness in your video game scripts, The Stick of Truth is a blast from start to finish.
