Pokémon Moon Nuzlocke Challenge: Chapter 7
By Neal Chandran

After a relaxing night in Heahea City, Lando sets out for Route 4. But before he can start exploring, Dexio and Sina corner him again for a battle and won't let him pass unless he obliges. Ugh, if there's one thing Lando can't stand, it's a pushy tourist, and here we have two. Guess they need to be taught a lesson. Too bad Bennie isn't around to show them how to be a good tourist. I'll bet he's squawk-laughing at Lando from the great beyond right now.

Sina sends out Delibird, and Lando swaps out Harry Mole for Joan Jett, who makes short work of it. Sina's next pokémon is Glaceon, who WendyWhallop annihilates with the Z-Move "All Out Pummeling." Overkill, sure, but pushy tourists need to be taught a lesson, right? Even Bennie would agree.

So, perhaps as an apology for getting in Lando's way, Dexio hands over a Zygarde Cube. With it, Lando can find glowing green amoeba-like cells of Zygarde and eventually recreate that legendary pokémon. Lando offers his best polite smile and a thank you, even though he will not be using this gift. See, because the Zygarde Cube was gifted to Lando, Zygarde counts as "gift pokémon" even though Lando needs to seek out its parts, and it's a legendary. Since his Nuzlocke rules disallow the use of gift pokémon and legendaries, Zygarde is off the table.

Pokemon Moon Nuzlocke Challenge - Grubbin

Lando sets out on Route 4 where Harry Mole and Joey coerce a rash male Grubbin with the Swarm ability to join the team. The newly named BuzzLiteyear is admitted into the party and WendyWhallop is moved to a box so Lando can bond with his new buddy. Even without WendyWhallop, Lando's team defeats a bellhop, a sightseer, and a cook along Route 4 heading towards Paniola Town.

The battle with the cook was a close call! After switching out BuzzLiteyear for Joan Jett, the cook's Cutiefly hit with a Fairy Wind that halved Joan Jett's HP. Joan Jett was cued up to use Rock Blast, but the Cutiefly attacked with Struggle Bug, leaving Joan Jett with 2 HP! Joan Jett's Rock Blast hit enough times to fell the Cutiefly. Sigh of relief!

Pokemon Moon Nuzlocke Challenge - Hau

Lando makes it to Paniola Town hoping for a small reprieve after that close call, but who should be there than that hyperactive knucklehead Hau, yammering for a battle. Ugh, can't a guy get a moment's peace around here? This battle with Hau does not go so well for Lando, because his party members either have type or level disadvantages to Hau's pokémon. Lando wins, but it's a hard-fought victory. He sends out DizzyDeanna against Hau's Pikachu and she manages to defeat that electric rat with the help of a few potions. Dartrix is a different story, though. With its Peck, it halves Vampiris's HP before she can attempt to Leech Seed it. It also seems to hit hard against Joey. However, Joey is able to whittle its HP down while Lando heals Vampiris and DizzyDeanna. DizzyDeanna's Copycat is able to use Dartrix's Peck against it to bring its HP into the red, but before Lando can heal her, Dartrix lands another Peck that knocks her out! This is awful! DizzyDeanna had Psybeam and Copycat, which made her more useful than anyone would expect, and she probably had more moves up her sleeve. Joan Jett finishes the job, but Lando is furious. Hau killed Lando's precious, diamond-in-the-rough Spinda and just stood there laughing like a blithering idiot about having fun! Losing a friend isn't fun, pal! Pokémon is serious business, especially when Nuzlocke-ing! May you choke to death on your next malasada, Hau! You've just gone from friendly rival to sworn enemy.

After taking out his rage on a raging Tauros in Paniola Ranch, Lando catches a modest male Lillipup there with the Pickup ability and instinctively names him Scotty. Right after that, he crosses the path of a breeder whose Mudbray's Bulldoze one-hit-kills Harry Mole. Come on! Losing TWO pokémon that exemplify the Nuzlocke spirit (otherwise throwaway pokémon that prove to be surprisingly useful) in such rapid succession is just plain rotten. RIP DizzyDeanna and Harry Mole, you and your sweet movesets will be sorely missed.

Lando tries to run back to the Pokémon Center to give Harry Mole a proper sendoff and substitute in Bam Bigelow or Wendy Whallop, but is ambushed by a Lillipup who won't let him escape. It calls another Lillipup who spams Helping Hand, and now everyone's locked in a battle of attrition. The Lillipups wear down Joan Jett and almost wear down Vampiris, but Vampiris manages to escape. Whew! Lillipups are irritating with their calls for help, and Lando wonders why he can't send in a second pokémon as well, especially since no one on his team has an area attack... except Harry Mole with Magnitude! Grr...

Here we go again through Paniola Ranch, with Scotty, BuzzLiteyear, Joan Jett, Vampiris, Joey, and Bam Bigelow.

Lando makes it to the Pokémon Nursery, but the mesmerizingly lovely and flirtatious lady there makes him forget himself for a moment, and he accepts an egg. This is considered a "gift pokémon" so he can't have it in the first place. Plus, he can't release the egg or trade it. He's absolutely stuck with it rotting away in a box. There is an old saying about breaking a few eggs to make an omelet, but Lando can't even make an omelet with this egg. *Facepalm.*
