Lando considers a few possible strategies but decides not to overthink his battle with Kahuna Hala. Kahuna Hala starts with Mankey, and Lando opposes with Vampiris. Mankey's Focus Energy and a fighting move leave her with only 1 HP, but she uses her turn to Leech Seed him and switch out to Belfry. Thanks to Leech Seed, Belfry is able to use one turn to give Vampiris a potion and another turn to knock out Mankey with a Wing Attack. Unfortunately, Mankey gets a Pursuit in that halves Belfry's HP. Hala sends out Makuhita and Lando sends out WendyWhallop. WendyWhallop's Brick Break halves Makuhita's HP, which allows Lando time to give a potion to Belfry before WendyWhallop finishes the job.
Hala is about to send in Crabrawler, so Lando switches in Regina. I remember Crabrawler being a tough hombre in my Sun playthrough, and it opens here with a Z-Move. Lando figures Regina will endure since she's a Flying type... but she's completely knocked out! Okay, no big deal. She was kinda dead weight anyway. Besides, this means no more Z-Moves in this battle. Lando swaps in Belfry with hopes to get in a good Wing Attack. Belfry gets one in, but Crabrawler knocks him out before Lando can heal him! Noooo! Just when Belfry was starting to come into his own, he's taken out! Ugh, and he was the only one on Lando's team with a Flying type move. Knowing now that Crabrawler is a pure Fighting type and not a Water hybrid (a mistake I made in my Sun playthrough), Lando launches his strongest pokémon, Bam Bigelow. Well, it seems Crabrawler has exhausted himself and all he does for three turns is Leer at Bam Bigelow. Thus, two Fire Fangs allow Bam Bigelow to dine on some succulent crabmeat.
The loss of Regina is regrettable, but no skin off of Lando's apple. She was all attitude but no substance. Unlike Lando's other fallen pokémon, who wait in the Cemetery Box until they can ascend to PokéPelago "heaven," Regina is released back into the wild. But Belfry... poor wacky little Belfry. Lando's going to miss that crazy bat. He had so much potential to grow and evolve into something greater.
But all is not lost. Lando can now ride Tauros around and break boulders blocking the way to unexplored areas. One of them is the Ten Carat Hill, where Lando seeks out a new companion before moving on to the next island. His first few encounters are Zubats, but despite the temptation to get one to replace Belfry, he engages the Dupes Clause to capture something else. That something else is a modest female Roggenrola with the Sturdy ability (my second favorite ability after Own Tempo). Lando names her Joan Jett, because Joan Jett is a woman that totally rocks.
An area called Ten Carat Hill Farthest Hollow "Green Waves" onto the screen, so Lando decides to look for another pokémon there. He finds a hasty female Spinda with the Tangled Feet ability he names DizzyDeanna as a play on Dizzy Dean (a famous baseball player in the early 1900s.) She seems a little "out there" but Lando's fine with unpredictable and offbeat characters.
The last detour before going to Akala Island is through Melemele Meadow to Kala'e Bay. To get from Memele Meadow to Kala'e Bay, Lando needs to pass through Seaward Cave, where he snags a hardy male Diglett with Sand Veil he names Harry Mole. Unfortunately, nothing can be caught at Kala'e Bay without a fishing rod or a Water type PokéRide pokémon, which Lando doesn't have access to yet. Well, it's off to the Hao' oli Marina now to set sail for Akala Island. Because Bam Bigelow is a few levels higher than everyone else, he's chilling in a box and Harry Mole is out with Lando.
Anyway, Lando, Hau, Lillie, and Kukui sail to Akala Island where Hau just won't shut up. Seriously pal, shut your damn yap for a minute and just allow us to just enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the ocean and take relief in the fact that we made it this far. Lando does his best to zone out the hyperactive knucklehead and reflect on his travels through Melemele Island. A couple of Wingulls are spotted flying above the boat. Normally, this wouldn't move anyone, but Lando's thoughts drift to Bennie and his other fallen companions. Four in total were killed in the line of duty, and there were a few close calls that nearly ended Lando's Nuzlocke Island Trial altogether. Despite all of that, he still made it to the second island. He's also found a newfound respect for some of his companions. For example, few trainers would think much of a Petilil, but Vampiris has proven to be a powerful ally thus far and totally deserves a Sun Stone evolution.
But before Lando starts wallowing, it's land ahoy. Good, because the crew is greeted at Heahea City by two beautiful women: Kahuna Olivia and Trial Captain Mallow. Lando musters up as much bravado as he can so the ladies see swagger and not a sad kid. Lando looks forward to some quality time on this island. Kukui informs the kids that there are three trial captains on Akala Island before heading off somewhere.
As Lando tries to explore Heahea City, his path is blocked by an annoying kid riding a Stoutland through town who won't get out of the way. Dammit Stoutland kid, Lando is short on cash and that part-time job Pyukumuku-chucking at the super elegant beachside Hano Grand Resort on the east side would be ideal. The job is easy and it pays well, which is a total win-win for Lando... if he could actually get there!
Frustrated, Lando decides to take a break from the Island Trial to enjoy a mini-vacation at the smaller, yet still fancy, Tide Song hotel Lillie points out. The journey has been so "go, go, go" from the outset that a moment to just chillax on a plush sofa in an upscale hotel certainly wouldn't hurt. A couple of flashy looking tourists named Dexio and Sina corner Lando outside the hotel looking for a battle, but Lando declines; he's taking the day off.
