Game of the Month January 2013: Ni no Kuni
Ni no Kuni's journey to western shores seemed to take forever, but it, thankfully, appears that our patience paid off in the end. Combining the remarkable and distinct art style of Studio Ghibli with a battle system seemingly ripped straight from Pokemon, Level 5's recent effort shimmers with personality and style. It's easy to mistake the exploits of young wizard Oliver on a quest to mend his own broken heart as mere kid's stuff, but Ni no Kuni is a traditional JRPG with bite and spectacle to spare. Ni no Kuni features a remarkably fast paced battle system based around finding and raising familiars to fight the various creatures of the land. Outside combat, Oliver uses special magic spells found in a book called the Wizard's Companion (which was a main part of the DS version of the title released in Japan and has been thoroughly recreated in digital form here) to interact with the world. Those hoping for large overworlds and tons of side quests should certainly give this PS3 exclusive a try before it quickly becomes a collector's item.
