Dragon Quest Monsters I & II

Publisher: Enix Developer: Enix
Previewer: Sarcasmorator Expected Release: May 30, 2002 (JP)

Ah, the bandwagon’s sweet siren call. Taking a cue from the monster-collecting game craze of the past several years, Enix developed and released several such games based on its popular Dragon Quest/Warrior series of RPGs for the GameBoy Color, and now the company brings all three titles to the Sony PlayStation on a single disc.

The first game is a dungeon-crawl through the randomly generated reaches of GreatLog island. The hero is Terry (a younger version of a character from DQ VI), who ends up on the island (conveniently located in his dresser drawer) when his friend Mireille (also a DQ VI junior trooper) is kidnapped by the demon Warubou. Unable to fight on his own in this land, Terry captures, tames and breeds more than 200 creatures, many from the Dragon Warrior series, to do the dirty work for him in a turn-based, menu-driven fashion.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2 comprises two games, one each for sibling heroes Cobi and Tara, following their adventures as they try to keep GreatLog from sinking, journeying to far-off lands in the process. Each character has a different set of skills to learn, different areas to explore and more than 300 creatures to discover.

The PlayStation versions of all three games feature enhanced graphics, and connect in some way to iMode cellular phones, though details are not yet known. The compilation is set for a late May release in Japan; an American release has not yet been announced.
