A Look at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's RPG Character Roster
Yes, we're really doing this.

The reveal of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was huge news at E3. It occupied exponentially more time during Nintendo's Direct presentation than any other game. Obviously, we only cover certain genres here at RPGFan, so we wouldn't cover Smash... at least, until I found a loophole.

See, it turns out that with the move to include every Smash character in history in Ultimate, that means no fewer than 25 of these characters are from games we directly do cover on RPGFan. And since Nintendo has released a King of Red Lions-sized batch of HD screen shots and gorgeous artwork for everyone, why wouldn't we share them here? Let's see who we've got.

Also, I'll mention now that I'm highlighting images here, but we have six screenshots for every single one of these characters in our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate gallery when you're hungry for more.

Shulk

Everyone's favorite Monado-wielder is here, and looking better than ever. Someone new joins in for his Final Smash that wasn't seen in previous Smash titles, seen above...

Cloud

Cloud returns, and yes, you can choose both his original Final Fantasy VII appearance and the Cloudy Wolf attire that he dons in Advent Children. The Midgar stage also returns, with stage hazards in the form of summons like Ifrit and other classic beasts.

Link

Link now dons his fantastic blue Champion's Tunic from Breath of the Wild. The makeover goes deeper, as Hyrule's hero is now armed with Remote Bombs and the Ancient Bow & Arrows. In a game with three versions of Link, this helps make adult Link even stand out visually from his young partners. Speaking of...

Young Link

Okay, there's something a little disturbing about a Dark Young Link, but I really liked the juxtaposition of putting this screen shot next to the completely cute one of him gulping down Lon Lon Milk with an Inkling watching in approval.

Toon Link

Well, since Four Swords Adventures could easily become competitive depending on your group of friends, maybe it's fitting that you can relive that battle here in Smash?

Ness

Look, let's be honest: Anyone as cute as Ness who's wearing a Mr. Saturn shirt just automatically wins. That's all there is to it.

Lucas

Lucas uses PK Bring My Game Out In English Already!

Roy

In a game featuring SIX characters from Fire Emblem, Roy stands alone as the only redhead. One of my best friends used to main Roy while I stood by Marth, so I have many a memory of getting my ass handed to me by his fiery moves.

Marth

Whew... is it getting hot in here? Marth has been somehow made even prettier. I'm very glad his Elvis-like white outfit is back. It just wouldn't be the same without it. (And hey, I found a way to include a Ridley screen shot on RPGFan. Checking that off my bucket list...)

Mewtwo

WHY IS EVERYONE ON FIRE?

Zelda

Several Zelda series characters are getting a makeover in Ultimate, in particular, all Twilight Princess-era designs are being changed. When it comes to Zelda herself, her appearance has been inspired by the stellar A Link Between Worlds, and it's definitely a change for the better.

Corrin

Corrin looks better than ever, but this is where I have to confess my ignorance with most Fire Emblem games, as I did not realize Corrin doesn't wear shoes... that seems like a really bad idea when fighting, but what do I know?

Pikachu

Pichu

If you ever have doubted Nintendo's marketing ability, think of Pichu. They had a beloved and infinitely adorable character in Pikachu, and they somehow made a cuter version. Delightfully devilish, Nintendo.

Ganondorf

In another very overt case of scrubbing Twilight Princess from Smash, not only has Ganondorf adopted his Ocarina of Time appearance in general, even his "Ganon" form has changed to what was seen in the N64 classic.

Pokémon Trainer

There are some characters I just know I could never play because of their complexity, and the Pokémon Trainer is one of them. But if you've mastered the three play styles, then my Poke-Ball-adorned cap is off to you.

Okay, I think you get the idea. There's a lot of great characters in Smash Ultimate, and I still didn't get to them all! Check out our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate gallery for everyone else: Sheik, Jigglypuff, Lucina, Robin, Lucario, Greninja, and Ike. And who knows? Maybe we'll still see another character announced that we'll cover here.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is coming to Nintendo Switch worldwide on December 7th, 2018.
