The Best RPGs of 1998 ~ An RPGFan 20th Anniversary Feature
From Azure Dreams to Zelda, 1998 was a special year for RPGs.

Our anniversary celebrations officially begin today! I promised a month ago today that one way in which we'll be celebrating our 20th anniversary is by launching a unique special feature each month of the year.

Yes, we indeed are cutting it close with this one. But most months don't contain mega-features like Games of the Year and Most Anticipated, so we expect subsequent features to release before, you know, the last day of the month.

We thought an ideal way to start celebrating our history was to look back specifically on the year that we began: 1998. The PlayStation was taking the world by storm, but the Sega Saturn not only still had a bit of life left, it actually saw some of its most famous and well-regarded titles release in 1998.

Take a look at our Best RPGs of 1998 Feature now, and take a trip down memory lane. Or, for some of you, learn about these games for the first time.

Oh, and I want to publicly thank my fellow RPGFan staff on this feature, as always. Since this feature was one of reflection, we had an open call amongst the staff for writing up tales of each game. Some selections were easy – nobody forgets the likes of Final Fantasy Tactics – but it's thanks to people like Robert Fenner that our list also contains lesser-known gems like Wachenröder.

We'll have more exciting things coming your way as 2018 unfolds, and we can't wait to share them with you. Enjoy our list, and stay tuned!
