Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ignis and December Update Release Today
Also known as the "character swapping update."
12.13.17 - 11:23 AM

After a year's worth of updates, Final Fantasy XV is getting its last... of 2017. We already know more updates and content are coming in 2018, but those are mostly shrouded in mystery. Today, however, the game sees two updates: The final main character-centric DLC with Episode Ignis releases alongside a collection of free updates, most notably, the ability to play as any of the four party members in battle.

Final Fantasy XV Episode Ignis Art

Ignis' cool, collected self, prowess in the kitchen, and tragic character arc made him my favorite supporting cast member in Final Fantasy XV, so I've been waiting for this update for awhile. Like Gladio and Prompto's DLC episodes, the events in Episode Ignis take place alongside key moments from the main game, as Square Enix explains:

Set against the backdrop of the Trial of Leviathan, this episode features a brand-new storyline told from the perspective of Ignis as he fights to protect Noctis. With multiple endings available, players will be able to see a different outcome of events based on their decisions made in the game.

During these events, Ignis will be joined at points by Ravus as a guest character. Ignis himself wields elemental-enhanced spelldaggers, and has an ability called Total Clarity, granting him the skill to attack several enemies simultaneously.

After completing Episode Ignis, a special battle unlocks, pitting Ignis against Noctis for some reason fun, I suppose? If nothing else, it'll be interesting to be on the other side of the Armiger-wielding prince.

As we've covered recently, famed composer Yasunori Mitsuda composed three songs for Episode Ignis, which are featured alongside new music tracks by other composers. These songs, as well as those featured in the recent Comrades multiplayer update are being added to the in-game music player.

While Episode Ignis is available for $4.99, or included in the Season Pass, the other key update today, now that all three bros' DLC packs are out, is the option to play as any of them in battle, swapping at will. Gladio, Prompto, and Ignis each have their own play style, mirroring their respective DLC packs. While you still can only explore with Noctis in the lead, this should add quite a deal of variety to battles. See screens of character swapping in action below.

Lastly, did you know there's an ongoing list of game updates on the official Final Fantasy XV site? I actually didn't, so hopefully I'm not alone. We'll have a review of Episode Ignis in the near future.
