In the latest Nintendo Dream issue Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii confirmed that Dragon Quest XI will release on Nintendo's upcoming NX. It was first confirmed for NX during the game's initial announcement alongside the PS4 and 3DS versions, but Square Enix later retracted its statement, saying they were only "considering launching" for it.

Alongside Horii, the interview also featured Pokémon series producer Junichi Masuda and Super Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai. Both asked Horii questions about the Dragon Quest XI version differences and development. See them in this excerpt from their interview below.

Yuji Horii: We're making the 3DS version in both 2D and 3D. I asked my staff, "is that something we can do?" And they said, "We'll do it." So we decided it would be done.

Junichi Masuda: So that means there will be four version across three different platforms?

Horii: Yes, there are a lot of difficulties because of that. Each version has a different look to it, and since there's a PS4 version, if we make a fix to it, we have to apply them to every version.

Masahiro Sakurai: Including things like the release date, it gets dreadful when debugging piles up... But you're not going to shift the release dates around and release them apart from each other, are you? Because Dragon Quest games are very story driven.

Horii: That's right, spoilers will emerge if we release one version earlier. However, we're a little concerned about the sense of distance in movement. It's different for each of the supported hardware.

Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time is due for a 2017 release on PS4, NX and 3DS. Horii hopes to release the game before May 27th of 2017, the end of the Dragon Quest series' 30th anniversary year. Keep checking back RPGFan for more updates.
