Despite Console Slump in Japan, Final Fantasy XV and Dragon Quest XI Expected to Sell Well
Nikkei expects sales of each title to exceed one million in Japan. 01.19.16 - 1:41 AM In the February issue of Nikkei Tredy, a monthly magazine that is a part of the prominent news conglomerate Nikkei Shinbun, there is an interesting article discussing the Japanese video game market. The article discusses the current state of the industry in Japan, detailing how in recent years smartphone games have overshadowed home consoles, and with the success of these mobile games current generation home consoles have not sold remarkably well in Japan. Despite this trend in recent years, Nikkei expects that both Final Fantasy XV and Dragon Quest XI will sell over a million copies respectively in Japan, and that these two titles will help push current generation hardware. The article also discusses the potential ramifications of Final Fantasy XV unconventional battle system: a large amount of traditional fans are expected to be alienated by the new battle system, while fans of more action oriented games will gravitate to it. I suppose we will see how it all plays out in the court of public opinion soon enough, and here's hoping that these two titles help to re-stabilize the console market in Japan.
