Fantasy dungeon-crawling returns!

Etrian Odyssey returns to Nintendo 3DS in its new form: Etrian Odyssey 2: The Fafnir Knight. Like the upgrade given to its predecessor, Etrian Odyssey 2 now features a brand new story mode along with various other tweaks and improvements. Perhaps most notably, there's now multiple save files so you can play through both Classic and Story mode rather than picking one or the other. From the time I had to play it, the game otherwise remains similar to the original, though it now also includes a new musical score which you can use or swap to the original version.

I didn't get a chance to see any story and only experienced the new story characters in battle. Among them was a guest character that only stays in your party for a limited period of time. The simplistic yet robust turn-based battle system remains, as does the hardcore dungeon-crawling and mapping. There is both a manual and auto-mapping mode available, so you don't have to draw the map on the bottom screen unless you wish to do so.

Etrian Odyssey 2: The Fafnir Knight will be available for Nintendo 3DS this August.
