Span Time, Space, and Genres in Evoland 2 This Summer
First look at the upcoming sequel, which will pack in even more variety than the original.

Released in 2013, Evoland was a short-lived, quirky little experience that evolved from a super basic 4-color pixelly experience to a basic 3D RPG evocative of Final Fantasy VII (at least visually). It was short-lived, but an interesting concept at the very least.

Now, developer Shiro Games is back with Evoland 2: A Slight Case of Spacetime Continuum Disorder. Like the first game, graphical styles will evolve as you play, but in an interesting twist, so will the genre at various points in the story, with some areas playing out as an SRPG, a shmup, side-scrolling action game, puzzle game, and even a fighting game. Take a look at the reveal trailer below, and see how many genres and references to other games you can find - I lost track after Street Fighter, Chrono Trigger, Mario, and Bomberman:

To give you a sense of the sheer amount of art- and genre-spanning in Evoland 2, here's a mosaic image showing many of the styles side-by-side:

Evoland 2 Art and Genre Mosaic

All this art and genre hopping aside, Evoland 2 promises deep character customization, dozens of characters to interact with, and an epic story. From the press release:

The story of Evoland 2 revolves around a hero who must protect the strange world he lives in by learning to understand events in different timelines, and in turn attempt to alter a grim future for the better. With a strange secret buried within the core of this world affecting the course of time itself and powerful forces at play, can he change the world’s destiny or is it already set in stone?

Shiro Games is aiming to release Evoland 2: A Slight Case of Spacetime Continuum Disorder this summer for Windows-based PCs, and plans Mac and Linux versions at some point later. Pre-ordering the title through the official Evoland 2 website will offer a 10% discount, along with a PDF artbook from the game.
