In a surprise announcement, Namco Bandai have released a brand new port of Tales of Phantasia on iOS. Phantasia was the first game released in the series, all the way back in 1995 on SNES. Since then, it has been ported to a few different platforms, including GBA and PSP. For those unfamiliar with the story, it follows Cress and his friends in their quest to defeat the evil, time-travelling warlock Dhaos.

We have some more info for you, but we understand if you want to move straight on to checking out editor Neal Chandran's review of the new port.

"Bringing the first installment in the Tales Of series on smartphones and tablets is cause for celebration. For the first time, fans and newcomers alike will be able to finally experience this fantastic adventure at the tip of their fingers," said James Kucera, Head of Mobile for Namco Bandai Games America. "We're proud to bring the most acclaimed Japanese RPG franchise to the App Store."

Tales of Phantasia will be free to download, but will offer in-app purchases including "being able to revive and continue from the point when players are defeated during battle." If that sounds like a concern for you, make sure to take a look at Neal's review. Also included are leaderboards and achievements through Game Center.

The press release says that Phantasia will be available today in the United States, Canada and Japan. We have not heard if or when there will be a release for other regions.
