Old-school Final Fantasy fans have been quite vocal about wanting an updated Final Fantasy VI. Following both 2D and 3D updates to the first four games in the series, an updated Final Fantasy V seemed to meet a positive reception in general, save for the lightly-detailed sprites.

So when we finally saw screen shots of Final Fantasy VI for smartphones/tablets, the game also got a mixed reaction. As a massive fan of FFVI myself, it's a tough situation. On their own, the new sprites look okay, but certainly clash with the backgrounds. If the whole game got this basic, pastel overhaul, I fear there'd be riots. The thing is, it looks like every background in the game has been redrawn. All battle backgrounds, map backgrounds, and the new world map actually looks wonderful. Final Fantasy VI is a big game too, so to re-create all of this artwork is a massive undertaking, for which the artists should be applauded.

But those sprites, man...

Oh, this was supposed to be a gallery update, wasn't it? Take a look at Final Fantasy VI as viewed on a Nexus 7 and see what you think.

Final Fantasy VI is available now on Google Play and for those following along at home, features several additions from the 2006 GBA version, such as new events and magicites. An optional hint system and "album" mode to revisit the story are new additions. We'll keep you updated when we hear what's going on with the iOS version, too.
