In the third Ali Hillis-narrated behind-the-scenes video for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix staff discusses the whole 'thirteen days' issue - that is, the idea that Lightning has to save the world in that amount of time ingame. Despite the game's self-imposed doomsday clock, the team assures you you can still explore and interact with the series' world, something that wasn't as possible in the first two entries. Even the battle system is described as having more tactics available to players - not surprising given how many different costumes Lightning can choose from, all with unique abilities.
