Final Fantasy XIV Patch 2.1 Additions Detailed, New Trailers, Gallery Update
A wealth of new content for that glorious Realm Reborn.
09.22.13 - 7:44 PM

Needless to say, we're pretty smitten with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. While our own coverage of the game is ongoing, Square Enix released quite a bit of new information about the game's upcoming content additions at Tokyo Game Show.

Before we move on to new content, let's take a look at what is currently the greatest challenge in Eorzea: The Binding Coil of Bahamut. This five-part dungeon has yet to be fully cleared by any players, but you can take a peek at its intimidating interior:

The large-scale Crystal Tower dungeon is set to be introduced in Patch 2.1. Tailored for parties of 24 players, this dungeon features bosses that call back to Final Fantasy III, such as Amon and the Cloud of Darkness, and will reward players with nostalgic armor from the same game.

The housing system was also detailed. Estates comes in three different sizes, and can be customized with 380 unique objects, such as windows, decorations, fences, and more. At first, only Free Companies will be able to purchase houses, but individual players will be able to buy their own at a later time. In addition to decorating their houses, players can use them to raise chocobos, sell items through their retainers, and eventually collaborate on huge crafting projects. Peruse a healthy sampling of the available customizations below:

Finally, the Wolves' Den is a PvP battle arena where teams of 4 players can meet for head-to-head skirmishes. PvP-exclusive abilities will be introduced for this arena, and it will be accessible via the Duty Finder, so anyone can jump into a match and test their skills — though coordination will be required to secure victory. A separate area for 1-on-1 duels will be released as well. Sate your curiosity with the following video:

Regarding the previously-announced crossover events, it was confirmed that the Dragon Quest X/Final Fantasy XI event will happen sometime this year before Christmas, while the Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII cameo battles will occur during the week of November 14th, to coincide with the game's Japanese release. Triumphant adventurers can snag a pair of minions from the former event (a Dragon Quest golem and Shantotto) and a Final Fantasy XIII costume (Lightning or Snow) from the latter event.

To supplement today's new trailers, Square Enix also released some new screenshots and artwork, which we've added to our gallery. (Editor's note: Those pieces of Crystal Tower boss artwork, in addition to the contents of the fourth fan kit released during TGS, make for some mighty fine smartphone wallpapers!)

All of the above content is scheduled to be released before the end of this year. Stay tuned for more RPGFan-exclusive coverage of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, including our next review journal and a look at the "Before Meteor" Blu-ray soundtrack.
