Pokémon X and Y: Mega Evolutions Explained
My social life is going to be mega ruined.

Needless to say, we're excited for Pokémon X and Y, and one of those reasons is the new mega evolution mechanic. Be sure to check out our recent post for more details. So how do these mega evolutions work? Keep reading!

First off, it's important to note that mega evolutions occur only in battle. In other words, you wont find a Mega Blaziken in the tall grass of the Kalos region. Second of all, not all Pokémon are able to mega-evolve. Sorry to those of you who were planning a team of Mega Rattatas. Once in battle, you can evolve your Blaziken (which is a mega evolution capable Pokemon) into a Mega Blaziken. In order to do this, however, your Blaziken needs to be holding a specific Mega Stone. Since we're using Blaziken as an example, it would need to be holding a Blazikenite Mega Stone. With the Blazikenite equipped, Blaziken will be able to evolve into the mega powerful Mega Blaziken during the battle. After the battle, Blaziken will revert to it's original form. Think of it as your Pokemon going Super Saiyan (as it will most likely be compared to).

Here's a video of some mega evolutions:

Excited for your super awesome Mega Blaziken? Well it's only available for grabs during the special Pokémon event, which will be held during the launch of the games in October. Launch day players will get their hands on a special Torchic holding a Blazikenite Mega Stone, which they'll have to train up to a Blaziken before they can utilize the stone's mega power.

And now for some bonus news! A new way to train your Pokémon, Super Training, has been announced. Fans of the Monster Rancher series should feel right at home with this new feature. Here are the details straight from the official website:

Super Training or S.T. is being introduced in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, allowing players to help their Pokémon grow stronger when they’re not in battle. On the Touch Screen of the Nintendo 3DS system, players can have their Pokémon participate in Super Training, activities that will increase a Pokémon’s base stats, the underlying values that define its HP, Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, and Speed stats.

One Super Training activity involves having Pokémon train by facing huge Pokémon-shaped Balloon Bots in a virtual space, with both sides trying to shoot balls into the opponent’s goal. Using the Circle Pad and Touch Screen to avoid shots from the Balloon Bots while landing their own in the goal, players will enjoy this action-packed feature while increasing their Pokémon’s base stats to help them become stronger for battle.

For a more casual way to help Pokémon strengthen their base stats, Core Training lets players set up training bags, earned by completing Super-Training Regimens, for Pokémon in their party to use. Pokémon will work on Core Training by themselves, raising their stats on their own. By tapping on the Touch Screen during a Core Training session, players can help their Pokémon increase their base stats, too. Players will be able to see how their Pokémon are doing at their Core Training at any time from the main Super Training screen.

That's it for now! Be sure to keep checking back for more Pokémon X and Y updates and don't forget to mark your calenders for the games' release on October 12.
