Expansions are one of the biggest things that can keep an MMORPG going - or give them a sometimes-needed kickstart - and Turbine is releasing another one for The Lord of the Rings Online at the end of this month.

The Lord of the Rings Online: Rise of Isengard has players making their way towards Isengard to confront - spoiler warning!* - Saruman in the tower Orthanc. Before reaching Orthanc though, players will first need to traverse the forests of Dunland and battle the corrupted warriors within, and make their way across - and defend - the Gap of Rohan.

Rise of Isengard also raises the game's level cap to 75 and adds the expected assortment of new quest lines, skills, deeds and enemies to contend with. Finally, a new 24-player raid has been added that pits players against the ancient (and evil) Draigoch.

We have images of some of these new areas in our newly-updated gallery linked below. Turbine also released this new Dev Diary video discussing the Gap of Rohan area in the expansion:

The Lord of the Rings Online: Rise of Isengard releases on September 27th, and will be available in three editions, ranging in price between $29.99 and $49.99 depending on how many perks/mounts/armor sets/Turbine Points you want. Pre-purchasing any edition will net you an in-game cloak and a 25% XP boost on all characters on your account through level 65. Learn more about each edition on the game's official site.

* Since Lord of the Rings was originally published in 1954-1955, I think I'm safe in "spoiling" this.
