iOS This Week: Machinarium, Plus Dead Island Gets an App
Guide an adorable robot on an adventure, and chart your collectibles in Dead Island. 09.08.11 - 12:28 AM Okay, yes, there was no iOS This Week last week. Not only was there a lack of RPG-related releases, but I was somewhat occupied being out of the country. P.S. if you get the chance to visit Victoria, British Columbia, you won't regret it. Anyway, this week may have a lack of news, but features an odd mix of graphic adventure and a map app that just may prove useful for anyone who is picking up Dead Island this week. Machinarium (iPad 2 Only) by Amanita Design Price: $4.99 [iTunes link] In late July, we reported that Amanita Design's robotic graphic adventure Machinarium was on its way to the iPad, and now the game is here. The charming visuals from the original Flash and PC versions are intact here. In fact, the developer was so intent on providing a quality experience on the iPad, the title will only run on the iPad 2 with its improved processor and graphic capabilities. If you want to know more about Machinarium, don't forget Kyle's review of the PC version.
By now, you've noticed that we posted a review of Dead Island. I won't spoil the verdict, so make sure to read that. If you're playing the game, you may be interested in the Official Dead Island Map App, which is... essentially what it sounds like. The app provides complete, zoomable maps of every area in the game. It also provides the locations of the in-game collectibles: ID Cards, Banoi Herald editions and Investigation Tapes, and allows you to mark which have been found to aid the hunt. This information has to be entered manually, of course, as it doesn't interface with your game save in any way. Still, for the completionists out there - you know who you are - this could be $3 well spent, and as a Universal app, it should prove a handy companion if you have an iPad around.
