It's been about thirteen years since the first Lineage MMORPG launched back in 1998. Last week, the company announced its 'difficult decision' to shut down its North American Lineage servers. On the official website, the game's staff explained that it's no longer financially feasible for them to upkeep the North American servers, and that they will be concentrating their resources in Asia - or at least, Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan.

As a result, the plug will be pulled on the servers for the first Lineage will be shutdown on June 29th. New accounts can no longer be created, but existing players whose accounts are in good standing can play for free until the plug is pulled, and those with unused play time will be refunded appropriately. Though there will be no content updates, the team has some ruleset changes and fun events planned for North American players.

In addition to refunds, NCSoft will also offer some player appreciation awards, detailed here. Some of the offers are codes to play Lineage II, City of Heroes Going Rogue and Aion for free for two months, plus some bonus in-game items. There are also codes to activate Guild Wars, which is free to play.
