n an unexpected (and welcome) move, the lovely folks at XSEED have confirmed just days after an ESRB leak that they will be releasing Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls this spring on the Playstation Network in North America and Europe. The game is a next-generation entry in the very long-standing Wizardry series, which got its start on the Apple II in 1981. The series is known for pioneering first-person dungeon-crawling, and while it enjoyed popularity in the '90s, it has fallen into relative obscurity since then. In Japan, however, Wizardry spin-offs continue to be steadily released, including on the PS3, with Labyrinth of Lost Souls being a more recent one.

The game has a structure similar to that of Etrian Odyssey, in which players create a diverse party of adventurers from a selection of eight classes and five races. They are then tasked with traversing complex dungeons replete with treacherous foes. Monsters and characters are all displayed as high-resolution sprites drawn by artist Yuki Hayabusa.

XSEED has promised to divulge more information on Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls in the near future. As always, check back with RPGFan for the latest details as they become available. In the meanwhile, XSEED also released six English screen shots of the game, which you can find in the gallery below.
