In an effort to whet fans' appetites, From Software has revealed a variety of gameplay details about Dark Souls, the upcoming successor to 2009'sDemon's Souls. First and foremost, they detailed the function of campfires, which act as safe havens in the perilous world of Dark Souls. Players will be able to restore their supply of Est, a healing substance, or regain life directly by using the monk skill "Recovery Miracle" on the campfire itself. Most importantly, campfires double as respawn points after the inevitable multitude of deaths that players will experience.

Several other character abilities were mentioned. Persistent enemies that follow players up ladders can be kicked down from above, characters can turn themselves into iron to increase defense at the expense of speed, and NPCs like the Black Iron Knight can be summoned for assistance. Players will need all the help they can get to take down enemies like the Dragon Zombie and an unnamed fire creature in diverse locales such as an enormous library, a swamp, and underwater ruins.

Dark Souls is currently scheduled to release later this year in Japan. Namco Bandai will bring the title to both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in North American and European markets sometime this year as well.
