Project Dark Gets A Real Name
And you'll never guess what it is! ..Okay, maybe you can.

Back at Tokyo Game Show, Demon's Souls developer From Software announce their next project, the tentatively-titled Project Dark. Even then, this was determined to be Demon's Souls' spiritual successor - but the official name just confirms it.

This week's Famitsu got a first look at the newly-titled Dark Souls, which we hadn't seen or heard a peep about since TGS. The games may not take place in the same universe or be connected in terms of story, but otherwise remain very similar gameplay-wise. Dark Souls once again emphasizes learning from your mistakes and rewards discovery, but this time you will be able to get more exploration in. Rather than just having a shrine as a central location and moving to areas from there, the maps are more connected - there is a main base of operations, but you can use other, smaller ones along your journey. The game will also see more areas with complex terrain.

As well, the follow-up still employs the classic RPG elements of levelling up, weapons and items, and you'll still be able to create your character although the job system is no longer. You have more magic and items to choose from, and weapons will have more motions and capabilities to suit your playing style.

Online play also makes a return, bringing back some (but not all) features seen in Demon's Souls, such as seeing other players, messages from the dead, etc. Because Dark Souls won't have dedicated servers this time, some features won't be making a return, like Soul Tendency. Multiplayer will include competitive and co-op modes, so you'll be able to call on other players for help, for example.

Those of you who found Demon's Souls to already be too unforgiving may prefer to run away screaming from this one - it's said to be even more difficult.

Though Demon's Souls was a PlaySation 3 exclusive brought out West in 2009 by Atlus USA, Dark Souls will be published for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 in North America and in Europe by Namco Bandai later this year.
