Soundtracks Update: "Have Yourself a Merry Squeenix Christmas..."
Let your heart be light with Tactics Ogre, Nier, a holiday-themed arrange album and some live performances! 12.25.10 - 11:17 PM Alternate title for today's post: "I squee, you squee, we all SQUEEEE for Squeenix!" Much love to Damian and Christine for teaching me how to squee. Square Enix fans rejoice! The follow-up arrange album to one of the best OSTs of 2010 was just released, and we have the review. Yes, of course, we're talking about Nier. Find out how it stacks up to the OST in our review. Even more exciting, though, is the four disc soundtrack for Tactics Ogre Unmei no Wa. Yeah, the PSP remake with upgraded synth music? If that doesn't pique your interest, you may want to look around the house for that soul of yours. "Now where did that darned thing go?" I don't know. But Sakimoto and Iwata want you to find it so you can best appreciate this soundtrack. Next, relating to our Christmas theme, Square Enix outdid themselves this year. Sometimes they'll release a free holiday single. This year it's a seven track album of arrangements you can buy! "X'mas Collections music from Square Enix" is probably the silliest idea for an album we've seen all year. Does the silliness end with the title? No, not really. We have a double review here (what does this mean?!) -- well I'll tell you what it means. It means both Damian Thomas and I had strong enough opinions to lay our words down to virtual paper. We both come at it from a pretty cynical perspective, and while I think we end up at the same conclusion, we take different paths to get there. As a bonus, we have a review for the CD version of "Video Games Live: Level 2." Note this live concert, recorded in New Orleans earlier this year, is also available on DVD and Bluray. We include it in today's soundtracks update because the live performance includes music from Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and the Final Fantasy series. You can't have a VGM concert these days without at least attempting One Winged Angel, I guess... Before the year is out, I'm going to empty my "pending post" backlog on the readership. My 2011 new year's resolution is to listen to more VGM than any year prior, and I won't be able to pull it off if I have a backlog waiting in the wings. Be ready for absolute mayhem.
