This week's issue of Famitsu magazine has dished the details on the latest project from Atlus, entitled Radiant Historia. The game is a traditional RPG for the Nintendo DS, and is being produced by several key members of Radiata Stories' development team, despite having no connections to the PS2 title. Mitsuru Hirano, of Shin Megami Tensei fame, is working as director, while Yoko Shimomura is composing the game's score. Designer Satoshi Takayashiki, who is being assisted by character and art designer Hiroshi Konishi, summarized the theme of Radiant Historia as follows:
"This game is a collection of stories based around the concept of time travel. When you look at something from a different point of view, everything can seem completely different. In this way the hero learns that his bitterest of enemies was just doing what he had to, among other things, and every cast member has a deep background to back up that storytelling. You aren't an impartial observer, either -- the player's actions have the power to dramatically change history. We're devoting just as much care to the boundless amount of side stories as we are to the main plot, so I hope you take the time to seek them all out."
Players will assume the role of Stok, a spy working for Aristel, a country within the decaying land of Vancule. While infiltrating the warring nation of Granorg, he stumbles upon the world of Historia, gaining the ability to travel through time, and is tasked with correcting history's mistakes to create a brighter future for his own world.
When the going gets rough, Stok will combat his enemies in traditional turn-based fashion on a 3x3 grid, where positioning is key. He'll also be able to team up with comrades to execute combo attacks. Details about other aspects of gameplay are currently unknown.
Radiant Historia will be released in Japan on November 4th for ¥6,279 ($71.97 US). No North American release has been announced at this time.
