Final Fantasy XIV To Have 18 Classes At Launch
Discipline? Who needs it?
07.24.10 - 8:20 PM

Square Enix's highly-anticipated new MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV will have 18 classes when it launches on PC this September. The 18 classes are split into 4 disciplines: war, which encompasses the melee combat classes; magic, which includes the classes with more magical proclivities; land, which covers the classes that gather ingredients for crafting; and hand, the group of classes that use gathered materials to create new items.

Disciplines of War

  • Pugilist, a thief-like hand-to-hand combat class.
  • Gladiator, the traditional sword and shield melee class.
  • Marauder, a heavily armored axe-wielding class.
  • Archer, stand in the distance and yell "PEW PEW PEW." Ranged damage class.
  • Lancer, a melee class that can use spears to hit multiple enemies at once.

Disciplines of Magic

  • Conjurer, a direct damage casting class as well as the quintessential healer, depending on your character spec.
  • Thaumaturge, a casting class capable of debuffing the enemy.

Disciplines of Land

  • Miner, mines for rare stones and metals for use in crafting.
  • Botanist, tends to gardens and gathers herbs for use in a variety of crafts.
  • Fisher, uses a variety of rods, baits and other tools to catch fish for crafting.

Disciplines of Hand

  • Carpenter, makers of wooden spoons and fancy chairs.
  • Blacksmith, crafters who create a variety of weapons and tools. They can also weaken enemies constructed of metal.
  • Armorer, the makers of heavy armors.
  • Goldsmith, creators of jewelery and other accessories.
  • Leatherworker, tans and dyes hides for use in leather armor and clothing.
  • Weaver, creators of clothing and cloth armors.
  • Alchemist, capable of creating a variety of potions and poisons.
  • Cullinarian, the chefs of Eorzea.

More classes will be added after the game is launched this September (Disciplines of Magic says "Hi"), but considering the open-ended nature of the game's armory system, which basically allows players to build a custom class from previously trained abilities, there shouldn't be a lack of options for creative adventurer.

Final Fantasy XIV will be released globally on PC this September 22nd for purchasers of the limited edition and September 30th for purchasers of the regular edition. A PS3 version will be launched next year in March.
