Surprise, surprise.

Square Enix today announced that Japanese retailers have sold more than 50% of the initial shipment of Final Fantasy XIII units one the first day of the game's availability. Out of the available 1.8 million copies, more than one million were sold yesterday. This figure does not include the Lightning Edition PlayStation 3 bundle. Thereby the newest addition to Square Enix's flagship franchise has become the first PS3-based title to sell more than one million copies. This also means that Final Fantasy XIII's day one sales performance was enough to make it the best selling game on Sony Computer Entertainment's platform yet. This distinction was previously held by Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4 (710,000 copies).

For reference, the PlayStation 2-based Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XII sold 1.46 and 1.44 million copies on day one, respectively.

The North American version, available for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is set to retail store shelves on this side of the Pacific on March 9th.
