In an interview with Reuters, Square Enix president Youichi Wada said he expected Final Fantasy XIII to exceed Final Fantasy XII's performance. Square Enix had shipped six million copies of the PlayStation 2-based title globally. Wada is betting on the positive effect of recent price cuts by console makers Sony Computer Entertainment and Microsoft. Final Fantasy XIII will be available for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in many regions. In Japan, the game is exclusive to Sony's platform.
Meanwhile, Square Enix is still hard at work to come up with new hit titles that can complement the company's two flagship series, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Wada mentioned that he had high hopes for two to three games which were currently in development. However, those titles are not expected to go on sale any time soon. Asked about their release windows, the Square Enix president explained that those new potential blockbusters will start to appear on retail store shelves only in late 2010 or early 2011. Looking ahead, the company is aiming for a line-up of eight IPs capable of shipping more than two million copies each. At an average development cycle of two years, this line-up would allow for the release of one hit title per quarter.
