A new trailer Square Enix showed off at their Tokyo Game Show booth shed new light on Final Fantasy XIII's story. The tragic protagonist of this story segment is Lightning's younger sister Sera. She is described as one of the keys to the game's story. After they lost their parents when they were still young, the two sisters have lived together. Sera also happens to be the fiance of playable character Snow. When the duo tells Lightning about their plans to marry, Sera's sister disapproves of the marriage. The trailer then shows an unconscious Sera. On her arm, the mark of the LfCie has appeared. Since she apparently had fulfilled her purpose as an LfCie, poor Sera is turned into a Crystal.
Other recently revealed characters include Yaag Rosch and Jihl Nabaat. Both are officers overseeing the operations of PSICOM, a special military unit of the Cocoon's government. PSICOM is tasked with protecting public order and peace inside the Cocoon. Therefore, they are fighting LfCie's like Lightning, which are considered a threat to public safety by the government. Deep within himself, Yaag who has a strong sense of justice, questions this radical purge policy of the government. His partner Jihl has no such worries. She is concerned with keeping the damage supposedly done by the LfCie to a minimum and wipe them out. She doesn't even recognize them as human beings.
One more interesting tidbits concerns Final Fantasy XIII's battle system, to be more precise, summons. Similar to Final Fantasy VIII, summons will have their own HP bars in Final Fantasy XIII. Instead of HP, summons possess Summon Points (SP). However, those SP not only decrease when a summon comes under enemy attack but they also decrease slowly but surely over the course of time. Once a summon's SP is depleted, the creature will disappear from the battle field.
The PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIII will be available in Japan on December 17th. In addition to the standard release, Square Enix and Sony Computer Entertainment Japan are also offering a PlayStation 3 bundle. The game's PS3 and Xbox 360 versions are set to arrive on this side of the Pacific in early 2010.
