At SCEA's press conference this morning, the first footage from Final Fantasy XIV was shown. Perhaps as a response to Final Fantasy XIII coming to both the Xbox 360 and PS3 in North America, FFXIV is being developed for the PlayStation 3 and PC.

There's not much in the way of details yet, except that it's an online game, is very pretty, and is due for release next year.

UPDATE: Square Enix has opened the official website for Final Fantasy XIV. The game is the mysterious "next-gen MMORPG" which was first mentioned by producer Hiromichi Tanaka three years ago. It is developed by Tanaka's team, i.e. the creative minds behind Final Fantasy XI. Tanaka is once again serving as producer, while Final Fantasy XI director Nobuaki Komuoto is reprising his role as director. Final Fantasy XIV's art director is Akihiko Yoshida who has previously worked on Final Fantasy XII. Series veteran Nobuo Uematsu returns as composer.

Final Fantasy XIV will take place in the world of Eorzea. The debut trailer shows an aerial battle between tower-like flying machines complete with wings as well as a sea-based confrontation involving a huge serpent, possibly Leviathan.

Final Fantasy XIV will go on sale sometime next year.
