Nintendo Announces Zelda For The DS
03.23.06 - 3:29 PM

Satoru Iwata's GDC Keynote speech shook some things up. Not the least of which was the announcement that the Revolution would play titles not only from Nintendo's own backlog, but games from Sega's Genesis (Mega Drive) and Hudson's TurboGrafx (PC-Engine). [Ed: Let's hope this means we'll see some of the older Ys titles on the Revolution! -John] The speech also covered what is to be the next Zelda title: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the Nintendo DS.

The DS title looks much like the GameCube's first Zelda title, The Wind Waker, with its cel shaded graphics. The game uses a great deal of the puzzle mechanics from previous games in the series, but throws both the dual screens and the touch screen in the mix. Players will be able to use the touch screen for combat as well, to direct Link's boomerang. Boss battles will use both screens as well. While a boss takes cover on the top screen, Link will be able to hit him with a boomerang or bow to drop him to the bottom screen, making him vulnerable to melee attacks.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is slated for release later this year.
