E3: NetDevil presents Auto Assault 05.19.05 - 5:44 PM NetDevil's Auto Assault was shown at last year's E3 and was an odd concept for an MMORPG in that it featured heavy-duty combat vehicles in place of characters. That much as not changed, but NetDevil was happy to prove they haven't been slacking off in developing this destructive delight. While last year's game showed a mostly top-down view of the chaos, the revised title now features an over-the-shoulder view with a draw distance of several kilometers and destructible, physics-based environments. Players can choose from one of three races: the humans, mutants, or biomechs, each with their own advantages. Humans for instance, have a feature called shield inversion which generates a field of mass destruction around their vehicles, while biomechs can transform through several different modes. The regular game takes place on a wasteland called the Highway, where players can dish out damage to one another and claim new items from NPC enemies. Unlike most MMORPGs which feature a player inventory and a bank or vault inventory, Auto Assault has a common stockpile, so players never need to go somewhere for their equipment. 8-player instanced battlefields will also be available, as well as arenas complete with ladder matches. Winners in the rankings will be able to win unique, one-time items for their efforts. All items in fact will have dynamic statistics with randomly-generated stats, including crafted items which will allow players to make custom recipes. Physics will play an enormous role in Auto Assault, using NetDevil's custom version of the Havok Physics engine. The game will feature fully destructible environments with spot-on collision detection with respawning structures which can be used to the advantage of players. Auto Assault will also have built-in voice communication.
