E3: Namco shows Hellgate: London
05.18.05 - 7:53 PM

Namco and Flagship Studios were on hand at E3 to show off Hellgate: London, a Diablo-style RPG/FPS Hybrid. Taking place in a near-future London, Hellgate's world has been the recent target of a demon invasion. Although it has only been in development for 18 months, Hellgate: London already incorporates 21 weapons of the 100+ weapons slated to be in the final version. Each weapon will be individual and will use a socket-style system for customization. The game will feature thousands of items and an RPG system with four statistics.

Hellgate: London will feature both offline and quasi-MMO online play. Online characters will be saved server-side and single-player characters will not be available for play online. Dungeons are random and will be instanced for a player's online party. However, the subway stations that serve as towns will feature players trading and the like. The game features a totally new graphics engine, and the randomly-generated dungeons are based on the real city of London. Landmarks in the game will be fixed, however, while the surrounding area will be randomized.

Hellgate: London does not yet have a slated release date, but do not expect to see it in 2005.
