Sony Online Entertainment has announced Station Exchange, an official auction website for the company's online games. The site will allow users of EverQuest II to buy or sell rights to characters, items or coins for real-world money. This official player-to-player online auction is designed to counter the growing secondary market for online games. The site's key feature will be security, as an item or character put up for auction will be removed from the game and moved to a secure auction server. Once an auction is complete, the buyer will find the respective character or item in his or her account. Sony Online Entertainment will begin offering the services of Station Exchange its users in late June.

According to unofficial estimates the underground secondary trade has an annual volume of $100 to $800 million US per year.
